If it is, use task manager (or reboot) to kill it. If that doesn't help, use the task manager to verify that Thunderbird isn't still running even though nothing is left on the screen. Usually this is an issue mainly when you've just upgraded and you discover that one of the add-ons doesn't play nicely with the latest version of Thunderbird but it could be (though unlikely) a side effect of an add-on being automatically upgraded. That will temporarily disable all add-ons. Start off by running it in safe mode (not to be confused with Windows safe mode) by holding down the Shift key when clicking on the Thunderbird shortcut.
